If a range hood removes contaminants at a flow rate of F liters of air per second, then the percent P of contaminants that are also removed from the surrounding air can be modeled by P=1.14F+18.31, where F is between and inclusive of 10 and 75. What flow rate F a range hood have to remove 85 % of the contaminants from the air? The hood must have a flow rate F of about  _____ liters of air per second.

(Simplify your answer. Round to the nearest integer as  needed.)

P  =  1.14F + 18.31     and     10 ≤ F ≤ 75

The question is.....what value of  F  causes  P  to be  85  ?

Plug in  85  for  P  and solve for  F .

85  =  1.14F + 18.31         Subtract  18.31  from both sides.

66.69  =  1.14F         Divide both sides by  1.14 .

58.5  =  F                  This is between  10  and  75 , so it is a possible value for  F .

The hood must have a flow rate of about  59  liters per second.
