At my office, 16 people own cats, \(8\) people own dogs, and \(3\) people own both cats and dogs.  How many people own a cat or a dog?

  1. so, 16 people own cats, 8 people own dogs, and 3 people own both.
  2. that means the 3 people who own both that the 16+8 people who are counted for cats and dogs
  3. you simply add 16+8 =24, then subtract 2 to get 22.

I think you forgot 3 own both in step 3. It's 21 since you do 16+8=24 as you did but then subtract 3 to get 21 as the answer.

For some reason whenever I'm doing an actual test I make silly mistakes but then casual problems I don't. Lol.
