Vanessa will graph the lines y = 1/3*x + 7 and y = 2x - 5. What is the sum of the x-coordinates of the two lines' x-intercepts? Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest tenth.

The x-intercept will always have a y-coordinate of 0. To find the x-intercepts of the two lines, substitute 0 for y:

First line:

   \(y = \frac{1}{3}x + 7\)

\((0) = \frac{1}{3}x + 7\)

\(-7 = \frac{1}{3}x\)

   \(x = -21\)

Second line:

   \(y = 2x - 5\)

\((0) = 2x - 5\)

   \(5 = 2x\)

   \(x = 2.5\)

Their sum:

2.5 + (-21) = -18.5
