A 100 ounce jug of very sour lemonade initially consists of 60% water and 40% lemon juice. 60% of the lemonade is poured out, and then 8 ounces of lemon juice is added to the jug. What percentage of the mixture is now lemon juice?

Initially, the jug contains 40 ounces of lemon juice (40% of 100 ounces).

When 60% of the lemonade is poured out, only 40 ounces * (40% * 40%) = 6.4 ounces of lemon juice remain in the jug.

Then, 8 ounces of lemon juice is added, making a total of 6.4 ounces + 8 ounces = 14.4 ounces of lemon juice in the jug.

The total volume of the lemonade in the jug is 100 ounces * 40% = 40 ounces.

Therefore, the percentage of the mixture that is now lemon juice is (14.4 ounces / 40 ounces) * 100% = 36%.

So the percentage of lemon juice in the mixture is now 36%.

The calculation for the amount of lemon juice remaining in the jug after 60% of the lemonade is poured out is incorrect.

The correct calculation should be:

40 ounces * 40% = 16 ounces of lemon juice in the jug initially
16 ounces * 40% = 6.4 ounces of lemon juice remaining in the jug after 60% of the lemonade is poured out

Then, adding 8 ounces of lemon juice gives a total of 6.4 + 8 = 14.4 ounces of lemon juice.

The calculation for the percentage of lemon juice in the mixture is correct:

14.4 ounces of lemon juice / 40 ounces of lemonade = 0.36 or 36%

So the percentage of lemon juice in the mixture is now 36%.

You sort of did, you voted it up when you first saw it and then voted it down when you decided it was wrong.

Please do not to this, if a person makes a serious attempt to help you you should always thank them with an upvote, as well as a comment.

You are upvoting them for their time, interest and effort. Not necessarily for their correct answer.

Your comments are quite nice although it is more tactful to say "I do not think it is right because ...(give reason).. " Rather than just  "Sorry, it's incorrect"

Initially, the jug contains 40 ounces of lemon juice (40% of 100 ounces). When 60% of the lemonade is poured out, we're left with 40 ounces * 40% * 40% = 6.4 ounces of lemon juice remaining in the jug.

The initial mixture is 60% water and 40% lemon juice. This means that the jug contains 60/100 * 100 ounces = 60 ounces of water, and 40/100 * 100 ounces = 40 ounces of lemon juice.

When 60% of the lemonade is poured out, the jug now contains 40% of its original volume. Therefore, the jug contains

40/100 * 100 ounces = 40 ounces

of liquid, of which 60% is water and 40% is lemon juice. This means that the jug contains:

60/100 * 40 ounces = 24 ounces of water 40/100 * 40 ounces = 16 ounces of lemon juice

Now 8 ounces of lemon juice are added to the jug, bringing the total amount of lemon juice to:

16 ounces + 8 ounces = 24 ounces

The total volume of the mixture is now:

24 ounces of lemon juice + 24 ounces of water = 48 ounces

Therefore, the percentage of the mixture that is now lemon juice is:

(24 ounces / 48 ounces) * 100% = 50%

So, the mixture now contains 50% lemon juice.

I think your question maybe stated incorrectly! You say " A 100 ounce jug of very sour lemonade initially consists of 60% water and 40% lemon juice." Very sour lemonade implies that of the 100 ounces, 60% is lemon juice and 40% water! If that is the case, then the solution should be:

At the beginning, the jug contains 60% of lemon juice, which means there are 60 ounces of lemon juice in the jug, and 40% of water, which means there are 40 ounces of water in the jug.

When 60% of the lemonade is poured out, the remaining lemonade in the jug weighs 40 ounces. This means that 60 ounces x (40/100) = 24 ounces of lemon juice are left in the jug, and 16 ounces of water are left in the jug.

When 8 ounces of lemon juice is added to the jug, the total amount of lemon juice in the jug becomes 24 + 8 = 32 ounces, and the total amount of liquid in the jug becomes 32 + 16 = 48 ounces.

To find the percentage of the mixture that is now lemon juice, we can divide the amount of lemon juice in the jug by the total amount of liquid in the jug and multiply by 100:

Percentage of lemon juice = (32/48) x 100% = 66.67%

Therefore, the percentage of the mixture that is now lemon juice is 66.67
