A price is discounted by 15%. Then, the price is discounted by 10%. the combination of these is _______
I Know _______ = 23.5% but have no idea how to explain/ do the problem on my own. HELP!

Let the original price be P.
Then the first discounted price is (1-0.15)*P = 0.85P
The 2nd discounted price is then (1-0.1)*0.85P = 0.765P
The overall discount as a fraction is therefore (P-0.765P)/P = 0.235
Expressed as a percentage this is 23.5%

Square both sides of the equation to get 12*12 = 16x (because squaring the square root of something just gives you that something). Now divide both sides by 16 to get x on its own.
12*12/16 = x, so x = 9

I think this question might refer to number sequences. So, in a linear sequence where the differences are constant the n’th term is given by d.n + a – d where d is the difference and a is the first term.

I think you might be asking about quadratic sequences where the differences are changing but the second differences are constant. Here the n’th term is given by a + (n-1).d + (1/2).(n-1).(n-2).c where c is the difference between the differences and d is the difference between the first two numbers.

I'm a bit out of my depth here (well, ok, a lot out of my depth!), but I think I might try to get an understanding by generating some specific examples using small matrices; e.g. choosing n = 3 and m = 1, say, so that A is a 3x3 matrix, B is a 1x3 vector, O is just the scalar 0, H is a 4x4 matrix and k would have just two values, 0 and 1. Fill A and B with some (randomly chosen?) test values to see if you can generate values that satisfy each of your three conditions in turn. I don't know if this is feasible, or even if it helps if it is, but it's the best I can come up with!
