   What is Use Of +-     

   That's called "plus or minus" and used to indicate that a value can be either positive or negative.     

   The most common usage is for square roots.  Example: sqrt(4) = +2   (+2)² = +4 and (–2)² = +4.     

   I make the symbol by typing a + and then underlining it.  Some people do it the way that you did.     

   There's an Alt- code that will insert it, but I don't like the way it looks.  Alt-0177 is ±   Alt-241 is ±

Gabriella drives for 40 miles at 60 miles per hour, 20 miles at 40 miles per hour, and 10 miles at 56 miles per hour.  Her overall average speed is 40 miles per hour.  If she drove for another __ miles at ___ miles per hour, then her overall speed would be ___ miles per hour.

P = (0,0) and Q = (1,1).     

The diagonal line from the origin to (1,1) is sqrt(2) long.     

Since that's a radius, the diameter would be 2 • sqrt(2).     

Circumference  =  2 π sqrt(2)

   The angle of depression to the island is 9 degrees. How much farther must the helicopter fly before it is above the island?     

   Give your answer to the nearest mile.     

   Draw it and the solution becomes obvious.     tangent = opposite / adjacent     

                                                                           tan( 9^o )  =  height / distance     

                                                                    0.15838444   =  1500 ft / D     

                                                                0.15838444 • D  =  1500 ft
