If you hve tables Julius you may be able to use them backwards to find the approximate interest rate.

If he spent  a    1/4   then he must have 3/4   left

So   $90   is   3/4     of the original amount

If you divide that by 3 you will have 1/4 of the original amount so

90 / 3   =  $30

$30 is   1/4   of the original amount.  

If you multiply that by 4 you will have the orriginal amount.

$30 * 4 =   $120

972/16 = 60.75

0.75*16 = 12

So the answer is 12          that is because 972/16 =  60 Remainder 12

OR

the average of 5 consecutive numbers (if the middle one is n)

\(=\frac{(n-2)+(n-1)+n+(n+1)+(n+2)}{5}\\ =\frac{5n}{5}\\ =n\)

Well that is the average of the FIRST 5 natural numbers.
